E-Letters Past & Present

4th June 2007

In this week's e-letter:

Best Call of the Decade Beaten by Worst Bad Beat of WPT and
Practice some moves for FREE in Multi-Table Tournaments

===================================

So - how has your week been? I am delighted to say that I came 25th out of over 1500 starters at last week's Sunday tournament and netted $1500 !! Now if I can just get to the final table... the payout will be EXACTLY what I'm aiming for, I just know I'll get there sooner than later -

Unfortunately - I went out to a nasty badbeat !!

I had KK and the flop came down, KS, 8S, 7S - I went all-in with my Trip Kings only to be called by someone who had a Pair of Tens - one of which was a Spade - and he Rivered me with another spade giving him a Flush :-(

Talking about Badbeats - I found this classic one for you to view - As I was watching it for the first time - the streaming kept stuttering and halting and giving stills of faces in the crowd - they were AMAZING to look at - try halting the video at various times and see what I mean...

Best Call of the Decade Beaten by Worst Bad Beat of WPT

======================================

See what you think...

It is the WPT (World Poker Tour) event in Borgata, Atlantic City on 22nd September 2005.

Kathy Leibert (one of my heros) had been knocked out in 3rd place and it is Heads Up between
Al Ardebili & Richard Festejo and they are fairly even in chips with Ricardo just a nose in front.

The Blinds are 100,000/200,000 with antes of 20,000.

Ricardo to act first and he picks up AS and 2H.
Ace Spades   Two Hearts

With 340,000 in the pot - he raises it to 500,000 which is a good bet with an Ace pre-flop in a Heads-Up situation.

Al has to put 400,000 in the pot to call. He looks at his cards to find 3D and 2D and he decides to call.
Three Diamonds  Two Diamonds

This has to be a very strange bet and can only be because he is going to bluff at the flop, hoping his opponent misses it.

The pot stands at 1,240,000 !

Vince van Patten commentating says: "Interesting - deceptive hand if you happen to catch - he's going to gamble here."

The %'s are not as bad as you might think - Ricardo's A2 is 69% to win pre-flop against Al's 29%.

The Flop comes down: 2S, 7D, KS giving both players a pair of twos.
Two Spades  Seven Diamonds  King Spades

The %'s are now: Ricardo 83% to win over Al's 16%.

Al checks and Ricardo bets 1,000,000 !

Al ponders for a minute and goes ALL-IN for his remaining 3,970,000 ! This really was only to be expected as it was probably his plan when he called the pre-flop raise. Now that he has actually caught a pair - he feels justified to continue his plan to bluff.

The pot stands at 6,210,000.

Mike Sexton very rightly says: "We can see that Ricardo has him dominated but believe me folks, if you're sitting at that table and the guy check-raises you for Three Million more - he has to take that bottom pair and muck it."

Vince whispers: "If Ricardo Festejo can make this call - it will be the call of the decade." Ricardo sits there and pushes the pressure point on his brow as he tries to decide what to do - Mike says: "The only way you can make this call is if you put your opponent on a stone bluff."

You can physically see Ricardo weighing up the odds in his head and after a good minute or so - he shrugs his shoulder, gives a small smile and calls !!

Would you have made that call?? It's a gutsy gutsy GUTSY move !!!

Ricardo looks like he's walking down the street to the gallows until Al turns over his hand - then a HUGE smile comes on his face as he stands up and claps his hands in total glee ! The crowd go crazy when they see the cards.

This is for the tournament - if Ricardo's hand holds up - he's won $1,498,650 plus a $25,000 seat in the 2006 WPT Championship event.

Vince says: "It is the call of the decade"

and Mike replies: "Yes you are right about that - you talk about the call of the century - Folks you put that one right up there - I don't care what happens in this pot - What a call Ricky made right here !! "

Al needs a Three or two running diamonds to win the pot.

Mike: "Ricardo can taste that WPT title and $1.5 million on his fingertips."

The Turn card is... 3H !!!!!!
Three Hearts

The reaction from Vince Van Patten says it all... "OH NO"

He staggers to his feet and nearly falls over in amazement !

The crowd go mad - Ricardo can't believe it and Al stands there not daring to move.

The only card that can save Ricardo is an Ace and unfortunately, for him, the River is 8H.
Eight Hearts

Mike Sexton sums up: "Ricardo didn't make it - he says 'I made the greatest call in poker history - WHY wasn't I rewarded for it?? - Instead I got punished'."

Post Mortem

It was crazy play all round. Al had decided that this was going to be his hand when he called the pre-flop raise from Ricardo. No matter what had come on the flop - except maybe an Ace, he was going to go all-in and bluff it out.

When the flop came down - he checked inducing Ricardo to bet at the pot then went All-in to get him to fold. When Ricardo DIDN't fold, he knew he was in trouble and he most definitely WAS in trouble - but the angels must have been smiling down on him that day and he caught his second pair on the Turn, crippling Ricardo.

Wrong move, right time.

Al then went on to win the tournament.

I just wanted to let you know that Party Poker (www.partypoker.com) run two Freerolls on a Sunday - just for UK Players. One is a No-Limit Tournament at 17.05pm and the other is a Limit Tournament at 17.20pm. The prize money is nothing really to speak of but it is a great way to practice playing in a Multi-Table Tournament without it costing you anything.

The only difference really is that people will make alot of stupid plays as it doesn't cost them anything and many players will drop out in the first half hour. If you last past the first break - then you'll be up against players who are really taking it seriously and you can practice your moves.

Well I hope you've enjoyed this week's e-letter - I'm always happy to receive your emails -
so please let me know how you get on: megarana@hotmail.co.uk

I'm off to qualify for this Sunday's tournament and to see if I can get any higher than 25th !

All the best
