Welcome to Hold or Fold - The UK's only Poker E-Letter dedicated
to
helping YOU become a better player!
In this week's E-Letter -
*Hissy Fits

Hiya there and how have you been this week?
I went to play live in a casino last night and I was really pleased
to place 7th out of 36 players. However, I have never seen a hissy
fit like it...
There was one hand where I was playing against a guy who was the
designated dealer for the table. He had been really friendly and
amiable for about 2 hours when I picked up QD & JD.
I limped in with a few others and the Flop came down QH, 10H & 9D.
I had Top Pair with an open-ended straight draw so I raised it up
- everyone folded around to the dealer who looked me in the eye
and went All-In - I called it and he slammed KC JS on the table
having hit the nut-straight on the Flop.
I sighed and knew I'd been suckered in but the Turn and River gave
me two more diamonds and I hit the flush.
He threw the rest of the cards on the table and said: "I'm
not dealing anymore - I'm fed up of playing against donkeys and
getting sucked out on !"
He went on and on for about 5 minutes, walking around the room,
muttering and shaking his hands...
It made me laugh as it reminded me of when my daughter was four
years old shouting: "IT'S NOT FAIRRRRRRR" - what a twat
- if you can't take bad beats then Poker is most defnitely not the
game for you !
I was the only lady playing in the room at this point and lesser
mortals might have been intimidated - but I just thought of the
Tony Gs and Phil Hellmuths of this world and just laughed in his
face.
I will not be made to feel bad about it - I've had bad suckouts
on me before but one just has to take it on the chin...

Talking of Hissy Fits...
********************
After my experience last night - I thought I might as well feature
Phil going off on a big Hissy Fit... If you haven't seen one before
- they are absolutely legendary - well worth watching for a laugh
and a half !
It's the World Series of Poker 2005 and still alot of players left
in the tournament -
Jim Pittman picks up KH & JH.

He's in the Small Blind and decides to raise it up to 1,200.
Phil Hellmuth in the Big Blind picks up AD & KS.
He decides to re-raise up to 3,200. The odds are 70% in his favour
pre-flop.
Jim Pittman ponders for a minute and thinks that Phil is pulling
a fast one so he announces: "All-In".
Lon Mcheren commentating gasps: "Wow - that's over 16,000
more chips and Phil's right there"
Phil looks over to check that Jim has indeed gone all in and in
less than a second he shoves all his chips into the middle too.
Norman Chad also commentating: "As quickly as Phil acted
- It's as if he KNEW he would have Pittman dominated right there
- they share the King but Phil has the better kicker."
The Flop comes down 4C 4S 2H - the odds are now 73% in Phil's favour.
Norman Chad continues: "Pittman is All-In and he's in
big trouble right now - he needs running hearts or a Jack."
The Turn card is 9C and the odds are now 93% in Phil's favour.

Lon Mcheren: "Ace King for Phil still holds up."
Norman Chad: "The day is growing short of Jim Pittman.
Pittman will need a Jack and a Jack only on the River or his main
event is over."
The River is JD.

Lon Mcheren shouts: "THAT is a BAD BEAT as Pittman steals
the pot!!"
Phil stands up and starts muttering: "Fricking donkey
stuff - the guy can't even spell poker - I re-raised to let him
know what I had - he peeled a King off and a Jack off - the Sucker
couldn't fold a hand - some of the worst players in the world -
I can't believe this is the World Series of Poker."
The camera points at Jim Pittman who sits there knowing he pulled
a bad beat but he says: "Go figure huh!?!"
Phil sits down and continues: "I threw away all those
hands just to make it look like they could move in on me - what
a terrible play - if I ever stick all my money in on King/Jack -
well of course that would never happen in a million years."
Jim starts getting annoyed: "Well I've seen worse."
Phil rants on: "Not from me buddy - that's why I'm the
9 times world champion of poker - always have the best hand..."
And with that he stands up and leaves the table for a little walk...
Norman Chad: "Phil said this guy can't even spell poker
- where else can I get more out of my entertainment-dollar."
The camera moves back to Jim Pittman who breaks into a big smile
and then shakes his head and says: "What a cry-baby"
The camera then tracks Phil moving towards the audience... he's
still ranting:
"Come on... you know.. Come on..."
He sits down next to his wife Kathy...
Kathy consoles him: "You're not out... you're not out...and
er... everything is going to turn around... You gotta let it go
otherwise...you're not going to give yourself a chance..."
Norman Chad: "This woman is a saint and an angel - and
I hope she charges him a good rate." (Kathy Hellmuth is a psychologist)
He returns to the table and raises a hand with AQ, he gets re-raised
by another player with Pocket 7's - he goes all-in and the 7's hold
up so Phil is out of the tournament.
He gets up from the table, shakes the guys' hand and says:
"Nice hand" then he walks towards his wife and continues:
"That maniac put all that money in with two sevens.. did you
see that honey?? That's about the worst hour of poker I have ever
had in my life... I KNEW he was going to off like that too... Sevens...
**** ... ******* worst players in the world around here..."
And with that he disappears into the black.
Lon Mcheren sums up: "Yet another classic Phil Hellmuth
exit."

Post Mortem

IF you are going to play poker - then you KNOW there
is a big element of skill BUT ALSO a big element of luck
- there are going to be bad beats - there are going to be cards
appearing completely against the odds - I've shown you loads of
them in my previous e-letters...
But... if you can't take it on the chin, if it seriously is going
to affect your stress levels and send you off into a complete tantrum
- then I suggest you take up Bridge. Bridge is a fantastic card
game and the skill factor is FAR greater than that of Poker.
In Bridge - the element of luck hardly comes into the game at all
-
So next time you get a bad beat against you - let me know and I'll
point you in the direction of some great websites to learn Bridge
- just DO NOT have a hissy fit - especially against me !
****************************************
Well I hope you have a good week - may the cards be with you and
I'll see you again next Friday.
All the best
