| Ace High - A hand with an ace but no pair. |
| Aces Up - A pair of Aces with any other pair. |
| Action - Frequency of betting - A game
or hand with alot of action is one where there is alot of betting
and raising. Also a Player's turn to act. |
| Ajax - Having an Ace and a Jack in the hole. |
| All-in - Putting all of your remaining
chips in the pot. |
| American Airlines - A pair of Aces in the hole. |
| Ante - Forced bet that players must make
before seeing any cards. This guarantees money in the pot for each
hand. |
| Back Door - Sames as Runner-Runner - having to get both the
Turn and River to catch your hand. |
| Bad Beat - Losing when you have a very
strong hand, usually to a very unlikely draw on the last card, especially
when the opponent should not even have played his hand. |
| Bank Roll - The money you have available to play. |
| Beer Hand - Having a 7 and a 2 in the hole
- the worst possible starting hand in Texas Hold'em. |
| Belly Buster - An Inside Straight Draw. |
| Berry Patch - An easy game with many poor
players. |
| Bicycle - The Bottom Straight, A,2,3,4,5. |
| Big Lick - Having a 6 and a 9 in the hole
(!) A phrase coined by Dave 'Devilfish' Ulliott. |
| Big Slick - Having an Ace and a King in the hole. |
| Blank - A poor card that does not affect
the game. |
| Blinds - The Blinds are the forced bets that must put in
the pot. The Small Blind is immediately to the left of the dealer
and posts half of the Big Blind which is the next seat to the left.

| Bluff - To bet strongly with a poor hand
which you have little chance of winning as if you have strong hand
in an attempt to make others fold. |
| Board - The visible cards in a poker game. These are the
community cards in games like Hold'em or Omaha, and the up cards in
Stud games. |
| Boat - Another term for a Full House. |
| Bottom Pair - A pair which one of your hole cards matches
the bottom card on the board or a pocket pair which is lower than
all of the cards on the board. |
| Broadway - An Ace High Straight - A, K,
Q, J, 10. |
| Bullets - A pair of Aces in the hole. |
| Burn - To discard the top card of the deck.
This is done to prevent anyone from being able to determine the next
card. |
| Button - Also known as the Dealer - The marker that signifies
the dealer's spot. The player with the button acts last on the flop,
turn and river. |
| Buy-In - The amount you must pay to enter
a game. |
| Call - To match the current bet equal to an opponent's bet
or raise. |
| Calling Station - A player who almost always
calls and seldom raises. |
| Cap - The act of putting in the last raise allowable on any
given betting round, usually Fixed Limit games. |
| Chase - Calling when you have not made
your hand i.e. chasing the last card of your flush. |
| Check - To basically skip your turn to bet. This still allows
you to bet later in the round should anyone else bet. This is similar
to betting $0. |
| Check Raise - To check at first, then raise
if anyone else bets. This is done as a way to lure other players into
betting when you think they may fold if you bet outright. |
| Chop the Pot - When two players have the same hand and the
pot is split. |
| Cold Call - To call both a bet and a raise. |
| Community Card - A card dealt face up on the table that can
be used by any player at the table. |
| Computer Hand - The Q7 which is recognised
as the middle hand in the possible 169 starting hands in Texas Hold'em
and is likely to win 50% of the time against one other hand. |
| Connectors - Having two cards in the hole which are next
to each other sequentially i.e. 76 or 98. |
| Counterfeit - A card that is likely to
improve your opponents hand. |
| Cowboys - Kings. |
| Crying Call - Calling when you feel you
have a very small chance of winning. |
| Cut-Off - The player who acts right before the button or
dealer. |
| Dead Man's Hand - Two pairs, Aces and Eights,
the hand Wild Bill Hickok was holding when he was shot. |
| Deuce - Two. |
| Dolly Parton - Having a 9 and a 5 in the
hole. |
| Donkey - A bad player - same as a Fish. |
| Doyle Brunson - Having a 10 and a 2 in
the hole. This is the hand that Doyle Brunson won two WSOP Championships
with. |
| Drawing Dead - Drawing with no chance of improving to the
winning hand. |
| Drawing Hand - An incomplete hand such
as four cards to a straight in which you are drawing cards, hoping
to make your hand. |
| Ducks - Twos. |
| Early Position - The first two or three
seats to the left of the Blinds before the Flop - and the players
who must act first after the Flop. |
| Family Pot - A round where everyone calls the opening bet. |
| Fast - Aggressive. |
| Fifth Street - The fifth card dealt in stud poker, or the
final card in games with five community cards. |
| Fish - Poor Player, always welcome at my
table ! |
| Flop - The first three community cards in games such as Texas
Hold'em or Omaha. |
| Flush - 5 cards of the same suit - see
Poker Rankings for more details. |
| Fold - Mucking your cards and not taking any further part
in this particular action. |
| Four-Flush - Having four cards to the flush. |
| Four of a Kind - Four cards of the same rank - see Poker
Rankings for more details. |
| Free Card - A card that you and your opponent
can see without having to call a bet. |
| Full House - A hand with 3 cards of one rank and 2 cards
of another - see Poker Rankings for more
details. |
| Gay Waiter - Having a Q and a 3 in the
hole - A Queen with a Trey (!) |
| Gutshot - An Inside Straight Draw. |
| Heads Up - A pot contested against a lone
opponent. |
| Heinz - Having a 5 and a 7 in the hole. |
| Hole - The first two down cards in poker
game. |
| Hooks - A pair of Jacks. |
| H.O.R.S.E. - A Tournament of 5 different
types of Poker, Hold'em, Omaha Hi-Lo, Razz, Stud,
Eight or better (Seven Card Stud Hi-Lo) |
| H.O.S.E. - Same as H.O.R.S.E. without the Razz. |
| Implied Odds - The odds you are getting
from the expected calls in future betting rounds. |
| Inside Straight - Hand in which you have four cards to a
straight, but are missing one in the middle. |
| Isolate - Bet strongly in an attempt to
make everyone fold except one other player. |
| Jackson 5 - Having a J and a 5 in the hole. |
| Kicker - The highest unpaired card in your
hand. Used as a tie-breaker. If two players have the same pair, the
one with the higher kicker will win the pot. |
| Kojak - Having a K and a J in the hole. |
| Ladies - Queens. |
| Late Position - The Dealer and Cut-off players, the last
two or three players to act in the round. |
| Lay Down - Fold. |
| Limp/Limpers - In the first round of betting,
simply calling the big blind rather than raising. This allows the
big blind to see the flop for free, and indicates a weak hand. |
| LOL - Internet Jargon for 'laugh out loud' when you find
something funny. |
| Loose - A player who plays many hands. |
| Maniac - A super aggressive player who is constantly raising
the pot, a big bully. |
| Montana Banana - Having a 9 and a 2 in
the hole. (article 92 made poker legal in Montana) |
| Motown - Having a J and a 5 in the hole. |
| Mullets - Pocket 7's. |
| Nut Flush - Highest possible flush |
| The Nuts - The best possible hand, given
the cards on the board. |
| Nut Straight - Highest possible straight. |
| Odds - The chance against an event happening. |
| Off Suit - Cards with different suits, usually referring
to hole cards. |
| On Tilt - Betting wildly or making poor
bets. Usually after a bad beat. |
| Open - The first player to commit chips to the pot other
than the blinds. To open the betting. |
| Open-Ended-Straight - A hand with four
consecutive cards. A straight can be completed by drawing the fifth
card at either end. i.e. having 5, 6, 7, 8, - a 4 or a 9 will complete
this straight. |
| Outs - The cards that will improve your hand, preferably
to the winning hand. |
| Overcard - A hole card higher than the
highest card on the board. |
| Overpair - Having a pair in the hole which is higher than
the highest card on the board. |
| Over the Top - To Re-raise a large bet. |
| Paint - Picture Cards, Jacks, Queens and Kings. |
| Pocket - The hole cards. |
| Pocket Pair - Holding a pair with the two cards which were
dealt to you in the hole. |
| Position - The order in which you have
to act - very important in deciding your next move. |
| Post Flop - Action which occurs after the Flop has been revealed. |
| Pot Limit - A limit on the maximum allowable
raise. The limit is the amount currently in the pot. |
| Pot Odds - The relationship between the total amount in the
pot to the amount of the current bet. |
| Pre Flop - Action which occurs before the
Flop is revealed. |
| Probability - The chance that an event will occur, generally
expressed in % terms. |
| Protect - Betting or raising so that your
opponents must pay a price to try and draw to beat you. |
| Put - To guess what someone is holding. If someone starts
betting when a queen comes up, you might "put" him on a pair of queens. |
| Quads - Four of a kind. |
| Rabbit Hunting - Looking through the muck for undealt cards
after a hand. |
| Rag - A card lower than a 9. |
| Rainbow - A flop containing 3 different suits. |
| Raise - To increase the bet. |
| Razz - (7 card stud low) is a poker game
in which the low poker hand wins the pot at showdown. |
| Read - Determining the possible hands of
your opponents or their demeanour. To try and get a 'read' on a player. |
| Rebuy - The act of purchasing additional chips. A Rebuy
Tournament has a limited amount of time when you can buy more chips
if you lose them. |
| Represent - To have the appearance of a
certain hand. For example, if the flop comes up with an Ace, anyone
who bets heavily might represent having an Ace in the hole. |
| Re-Raise - To increase an opponent's raise with an additional
amount. |
| Ring Game - A Cash Game which is not in
a Tournament. You can jump on and off the table when you like. |
| River - The last card dealt on the board - Fifth Street. |
| Rock - A very tight player who rarely bluffs. |
| Royal Flush - The highest possible Poker Hand, A,K,Q,J and
10 of the same suit - see Poker Rankings
for more details. |
| Runner-Runner - A draw that requires both
the Turn and the River to improve |
| Sailboats - A pair of 4's in the hole. |
| Sandbag - Slow Play. To play a strong hand
as if it is weak in an effort to lure opponents into betting. |
| Scare Card - A card that is potentially dangerous either
to you or your opponent. i.e. if you have a Pair of Kings in the hole
and an Ace comes on the flop - this is definitely a Scare Card. |
| Semi-Bluff - A bet or raise when you probably
do not have the best hand but could improve to the best hand on the
remaining cards to come. |
| Set - Three of a kind when holding a pocket pair which matchest
one of the board cards. |
| Shark - A very good player, often circling
around searching for fish ! |
| Short-Handed - Refers to games where there are only a few
players on the table - Many Poker sites offer Short-Handed tables
of 5 or 6 players. |
| Short Stack - A player who does not have
very many chips left to bet or having the least amount of chips on
the table compared to the other players. |
| Show Down - When all cards have been dealt and betting is
complete, player hands are revealed. |
| Side Pot - If a player goes all-in, and
there are two or more betters with more funds that call, they may
continue to bet. Their future bets are placed in a separate side pot. |
| Siegfried and Roy - A pair of Queens in the hole (!) |
| Slowplay - Checking or just calling a very
strong hand on one round of betting in order to show weakness in the
hope of winning more bets on later rounds of betting. |
| SNG - Sit and Go Tournament - Small tournament with no set
start time. Players sit down and the tournament starts as soon as
there are enough players. |
| Snowmen - A pair of 8's. |
| Splash - Tossing your chips into the pot before anyone can
verify the amount. |
| Split the Pot - Dividing the pot equally
between two or more opponents who have the same hand. |
| Steal - Raising to win the blinds pre-flop. Stealing the
pot on later betting rounds is the same as a bluff. |
| Straight - Five sequential cards of mixed
suits - see Poker Rankings for more details. |
| Straight Flush - Five sequential cards of the same suit
- see Poker Rankings for more details. |
| String Bet - Illegal bet made by placing
chips in the pot, then going back to your stack for more chips. This
allows you to guage an opponent's reaction with each chip amount.
Only in Live situations, not online. |
| Suited - Cards of the same suit. |
| Suited Connectors - Sequential cards of
the same suit i.e. 7S and 8S. |
| Table Image - How a player is perceived to play, generally
relates to how tight/loose or passive/aggressive he is. |
| Tell - Something a player will do that gives away the strength
of his hand. |
| Three of a Kind - Three cards of the same denomination -
see Poker Rankings for more details. |
| Tight - A player who doesn't play very many hands. |
| Tilt - A player who plays recklessly and wild because he
is upset or angry, especially after a bad beat. |
| Top Pair - A pair using one of your hole cards to match the
highest card on the board. |
| Trips - Three of a kind when one of your pocket cards matches
a pair on the board. |
| The Turn - The fourth board card - 4th Street. |
| Under the Gun - The first player to act preflop in early
position. |
| Walking Sticks - A pair of 7's in the hole. |
| Wired - Pocket cards of the same rank - A Pocket Pair. |
| W.S.O.P. - The World Series of Poker. Annual series of Poker
Tournaments. |
